Well, Longmire has been moving in this direction for some time, and now he's all in。 This latest novel is a a deep exploration into (a particular corner of) the mythology in Native culture。 Walt seems to be between worlds, while he is fighting for his life and unable to remember who he is, where he is, and who are all of these people that look familiar to him, but he can't place them。Even in this mental fog, Walt keeps working the case。Assuming you have been reading these books, this one will be Well, Longmire has been moving in this direction for some time, and now he's all in。 This latest novel is a a deep exploration into (a particular corner of) the mythology in Native culture。 Walt seems to be between worlds, while he is fighting for his life and unable to remember who he is, where he is, and who are all of these people that look familiar to him, but he can't place them。Even in this mental fog, Walt keeps working the case。Assuming you have been reading these books, this one will be satisfying。 If you haven't read them, this book will make absolutely no sense to you。 So go back and read #1-17。I love Walt and his buddies。 。。。more
John Graham,
I love Walt Longmire and I have read and enjoyed all of the Craig Johnson books 。。。。until this one。 I made it about a third of the way thru and had to stop。 While Johnson always had some mystical parts regarding Indian lure/superstition this one was nothing but。 Go back to Walt and Vic and Henry Standing Bear and some solve some crime/problem in Wyoming。 That is what made the stories real and good。
Stephen Snead,
I love to read but George Guidall captures Walt Longmire perfectly on Audible。 So when it comes to the Longmire mysteries I often get the Audible version。 This doesn't disappoint。 It's a unique story in that it takes place mostly in an alternate reality。 An aspect of the afterlife? Walt's consciousness? Parallel time stream? It's a really good beginning and the best part for me is when Walt first Wakes up in the street of the town。 Craig Johnson creates a surreal atmosphere that draws you in。 Hi I love to read but George Guidall captures Walt Longmire perfectly on Audible。 So when it comes to the Longmire mysteries I often get the Audible version。 This doesn't disappoint。 It's a unique story in that it takes place mostly in an alternate reality。 An aspect of the afterlife? It's a really good beginning and the best part for me is when Walt first Wakes up in the street of the town。 Craig Johnson creates a surreal atmosphere that draws you in。 His respect for Indian culture and the spiritual nature of life as well as a healthy dose of what's real and what's in the mind and what's the difference makes for a good story。 As in real life there are degrees of good and evil and rarely is anything going to fit neatly in a box with a bow on top。 Still there are aspects of evil that are done by humans that can't be explained away by a gray area。 But the cosmic balance isn't always so clear。 Thankfully Vic who is easily the most annoying character in the Longmire universe (in my opinion) doesn't suck all the air out of the story this time with her cloying ways。 Although it's a testament to the skill of Craig Johnson that he create's a fictional character that the reader either instantly loves or in my case really despises。 There wasn't enough Walt and Henry but in my opinion there hasn't been enough since the first novel The Cold Dish。 All in all a five star outing。 。。。more

My favorite narrator reading my favorite series。 After an introduction in which Craig Johnson warns that "this one is different," the book heads off into unchartered territory involving a historical tragedy, ghosts from Walt's past who share one thing in common, and a mystical component。 Plus all the usual sidekicks。 Salty Vic, trusty Dog, and the Cheyenne Nation。 My favorite narrator reading my favorite series。 After an introduction in which Craig Johnson warns that "this one is different," the book heads off into unchartered territory involving a historical tragedy, ghosts from Walt's past who share one thing in common, and a mystical component。 Plus all the usual sidekicks。 Salty Vic, trusty Dog, and the Cheyenne Nation。 。。。more
Nancy,
I enjoy supernatural stories and was not expecting this story line。
Larry Weinstein,
A Mystical Adventure I could not put this book down。 All of Craig's fans will love this book。 It was different from the previous Longmire books in that it had a mystical vibe。 What Walt experienced gave incite to the mysteries of the universe。 A Mystical Adventure I could not put this book down。 All of Craig's fans will love this book。 It was different from the previous Longmire books in that it had a mystical vibe。 What Walt experienced gave incite to the mysteries of the universe。 。。。more
Janet,
A departure from the usual Longmire stories, though there have been hints of it in prior books。 Loved it。
Vicky,
Not your typical Walt Longmire。 Obviously, Johnson and Walt have started to think about mortality, and in this book Native American mythology and spirituality are key elements。 Definitely read the previous book, Daughter of the Morning Star before reading this one, since it sets the stage。 In fact, I had to go back reread a couple of the final chapters in Daughter to refresh to remember the circumstances leading up to Hell and Back。
Ramona,
Not my favorite Longmire book since the story is basically Walt’s subconscious。
Thad Allen,
This book has been somewhat controversial among Longmire fans。 It certainly would not be the one to start the series with。 Longmire wakes up with amnesia in a place he does not remember ever being。 He keeps meeting people who seem familiar, but he cannot place who they are。 Meantime Henry Standing Bear and Vic Moretti are trying to find Walt。The Native American spirituality and the aspects of life, death and perhaps a bit of time travel seems to upset some readers。 I found it fascinating and not This book has been somewhat controversial among Longmire fans。 It certainly would not be the one to start the series with。 Longmire wakes up with amnesia in a place he does not remember ever being。 He keeps meeting people who seem familiar, but he cannot place who they are。 Meantime Henry Standing Bear and Vic Moretti are trying to find Walt。The Native American spirituality and the aspects of life, death and perhaps a bit of time travel seems to upset some readers。 I found it fascinating and not totally different from other encounters Longmire has had with the spirit world。 Read it and decide for yourself。 。。。more
Ted Barringer,
I love this series, even with the increasing "mysticism" with every book。 This one went a little too far, IMO。 Never-the-less I trudged through and made it to the end。I fear that Mr Johnson may "have jumped the shark" as it were with this installment。Writing series books must get hard - after a while the stories get too outlandish, the writing seems to go faster and faster, it appears to be a money grab。 Stuart Woods is the worst, but Daniel Silva and his far left politics has killed Gabriel Alo I love this series, even with the increasing "mysticism" with every book。 This one went a little too far, IMO。 Never-the-less I trudged through and made it to the end。I fear that Mr Johnson may "have jumped the shark" as it were with this installment。Writing series books must get hard - after a while the stories get too outlandish, the writing seems to go faster and faster, it appears to be a money grab。 Stuart Woods is the worst, but Daniel Silva and his far left politics has killed Gabriel Alon for me, C J Box is getting a little stale at this point, even Spenser was getting dull and systematic at the end。 I hold out hope for Lucas davenport, I am on book 18 or 19 and Sandford is still holding onto good stories。Anyway, I'll continue on with CJ and hope for Walt to rejoin the real world。 。。。more

Sorry just not for me。 I did enjoy the scenes with Standing Bear。
Pam Bales,
Love the Longmire series both in print and video。 Seems like it took forever to be released this time。 I placed a hold on it in March I believe and it was just available a week ago。 Always wonderful characters, plot, and setting。 Last book left the reader hanging on the edge of a cliff by fingernails。 The new book takes off running and doesn't stop, Definitely need the Ghostbusters because the neighborhood is infested with familiar characters long gone through the many volumes。 It's always good Love the Longmire series both in print and video。 Seems like it took forever to be released this time。 I placed a hold on it in March I believe and it was just available a week ago。 Always wonderful characters, plot, and setting。 Last book left the reader hanging on the edge of a cliff by fingernails。 The new book takes off running and doesn't stop, Definitely need the Ghostbusters because the neighborhood is infested with familiar characters long gone through the many volumes。 It's always good to have long gone characters reappear。 If you haven't ventured into the world of Walt Longmire, please give the series a try。 。。。more

I look forward to a new Longmire book every September。 This one was just too far fetched for me。 Disappointed 😔😔
Mike Nettleton,
There's always been a strong mystic/spiritual element to Johnson's Longmire books and this time he goes at it full tilt。 You're left guessing how much of the story takes place in Walt's coma-induced dream world and how much of it is happening in real time。 It can be baffling at times, with a very large "huh, whaaaat?" factor, but it's still entertaining and thought provoking。 You may have to work a little harder on this book than some of the others, but, ultimately, it's worth the effort。 There's always been a strong mystic/spiritual element to Johnson's Longmire books and this time he goes at it full tilt。 You're left guessing how much of the story takes place in Walt's coma-induced dream world and how much of it is happening in real time。 It can be baffling at times, with a very large "huh, whaaaat?" factor, but it's still entertaining and thought provoking。 You may have to work a little harder on this book than some of the others, but, ultimately, it's worth the effort。 。。。more
LAURA,
Beautiful story。 Craig Johnson is a masterful story teller。
McKay,
I didn't mind the story too much, sometimes hard to follow with all of the time changing and trying to decide who was real and what was real and what wasn't。 Seemed like a good, typical Longmire story。 I listened to this on Audible so the narrator pronounced all the Native American words, which might have been a bit more difficult to read。 Overall not a bad book。 I didn't mind the story too much, sometimes hard to follow with all of the time changing and trying to decide who was real and what was real and what wasn't。 Seemed like a good, typical Longmire story。 I listened to this on Audible so the narrator pronounced all the Native American words, which might have been a bit more difficult to read。 Overall not a bad book。 。。。more

Outstanding This is the best Longmire Mystery yet。 It is ideal for this month of October as there is plenty of suspense in the book and some chilling surprises。 Craig Johnson has definitely out did himself and I can hardly wait until the next book comes out。
Jen,
I was so hesitant to read this one, as I generally stay away from Indian School stories because I can't handle stories about children in serious danger。 There are children in danger here, but the story is not told from their point of view。 This also focuses on one main event and hints at but doesn't display the ongoing cruelty of life at the school。 I really enjoyed the supernatural element in this one, though it did get a bit confusing going back and forth between Walt, Henry, and Vic。 For this I was so hesitant to read this one, as I generally stay away from Indian School stories because I can't handle stories about children in serious danger。 There are children in danger here, but the story is not told from their point of view。 This also focuses on one main event and hints at but doesn't display the ongoing cruelty of life at the school。 I really enjoyed the supernatural element in this one, though it did get a bit confusing going back and forth between Walt, Henry, and Vic。 For this one, more than others, it helps to have some knowledge of past Longmire books。 。。。more

Haunting。 Walt is just over the border in Montana, where mystery and the timely story of an old Indian Boarding School intersect。
Donna,
Wonderful addition to this outstanding series
Linda,
My least favorite Longmire book。 Interesting。 Mystical。 But I much prefer the other books in the series that are about Longmire as sheriff solving cases with the other characters and where some Native American spiritualism is weaved into the story。
Debra,
Long time fan。 Best Walt yarn yet。31 Silver Stars!
